 The minister of information and culture, Lai Mohammed, says offenders of dangerous comments will henceforth be held accountable by the federal government 

- He cautions that any attempt to circumvent the rightful position of the media in the society could be inimical to national cohesion - Sanusi laments over usage of hate speech in social media 

The federal government has warned that it would prosecute those who indulge in the practice of hate speech in accordance with the 2011 terrorism act. The minister of information and culture, Lai Mohammed, who gave the warning on Monday, February 19, at the second national conference of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) in Kano, noted that offenders of dangerous comments would henceforth be prosecuted by the federal government. Mohammed who described the media as a moulder of the public view, noted the federal government has continued to promote ethical standard and the core responsibility of the journalism profession. 
He however cautioned that any attempt to circumvent the rightful position of the media in the society could be inimical to national cohesion. “As gatekeeper, the media is expected in high hope to build responsible and lead vibrant societal development devoid of dangerous and hate speeches. The Federal Government will continue to promote and uphold ethical standard," the minister said. 
Meanwhile, Emir of Kano Muhammadu Sanusi II on Monday, February 19, faulted usage of hate speech in the social media and called on relevant authorities to checkmate the menace before it drags the country into anarchy. The Nation reports Sanusi who made this known through the district head of Rogo, Alhaji Muhammad Muhammad Muaraz, said political leadership across board must arise and fight against the usage of hate speech. The monarch made this in his remarks during the opening session of the 2nd NUJ National Conference Kano 2018 with the theme, 'Hate Speech: Halting the Tide before It Is Too Late'. He further said that Nigeria is on the path to anarchy because of the reckless use of hate speeches on social media platforms.
